Our Mission

Our mission begins with cooking delicious meals and sharing not just food, but hope, with those without shelter. We seek to know their names—names often left unspoken for weeks—and to listen to their beautiful, untold stories. We believe that every person has inherent dignity, not because of what they own, but simply because they are human. While daily care and love are easy to take for granted, many experiencing homelessness haven’t felt that warmth in a long time. A little bit of genuine love and attention can make all the difference. Beyond providing meals, Support Teams work to restore belief in their abilities and remove barriers to jobs and housing, helping to reignite their sense of purpose. This mission doesn’t just change the lives of those we serve—it transforms the hearts of the students involved. In a world that often teaches young people to focus on themselves, we cultivate a spirit of service, shaping students into compassionate leaders who will leave college ready to serve the world.

Mission

How We Operate

The name 'Food for Thought' embodies our dual mission of not only providing food but also companionship to those without shelter. The organization operates by having a group of 15-20 members bond together while cooking a large meal served on paper plates. There is then a 5-minute reflection/prayer period acknowledging our commitment to those without shelter and the obligation to serve the underrepresented. In groups of 2-3, members then head to the streets and enjoy their meal with those without shelter, seeking to deepen bonds and share compassion with everyone in Madison, Wisconsin. Additionally we have Support Teams that work directly with a homeless individual growing in friendship and aiding the attainment of a driver's license, job, and housing.

How We Operate

Our Origin

A group of UW-Madison students came together after spending time sharing food with people experiencing homelessness. Seeing the profound impact on both the individuals they served and on themselves, they wanted to share this opportunity with other students. The name 'Food for Thought' originated from the idea that by sharing food, we also share thoughts—truly embodying the concept. This self-funded initiative was ignited by a passion to cook, share food, and spread love to those without shelter.
